2Not the Shulton formulation  Oct 11, 2009
By D. Edwards

Old Spice was originally produced by Shulton, a New Jersey company. The Old Spice brand was purchased by Proctor and Gamble in 1990.

P&G reformulated Old Spice to work with the plastic bottles a few years later. If you have memories of the Shulton Old Spice scent, you will find the new stuff to be evocative, but decidedly brighter, more floral and powdery. The original Shulton was deeper and spicier.

The new P&G Old Spice "classic" after shave and cologne are not terrible products, but they are not "the same as they always were".

I'd love to see P&G offer a nostalgia version of Old Spice, in the glass bottles with the original Shulton scent. I'm sure a limited edition, complete with cologne, shaving talc, and shaving soap would be well received by those who remember that deep, spicy scent that Old Spice when Shulton made it.

1where is the original old spice?????  Sep 14, 2008
By Julian Janik
I bought this Old Spice Classic at a local store not from Amazon, because the store didn't have any of the original.
I thought this new Old Spice Classic was replacing the original.
What a disappointment.
It feels like the product was watered down, very, extremely, mild scent or none at all. Feels like water being splashed on - no scent.
Don't buy this Old Spice Classic. IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL.
I hope the company releases the Original Old Spice soon - it was a better after shave.

1It's Definietely Not the Same  Nov 18, 2009
By Robert Speziale "bob_spez"
I used Old Spice After Shave for 43 years and stopped after buying my first plastic bottle of what used to be my favorite after shave. I am now using the only other after shave I like, Aramis After Shave at $50 for an 8 oz. bottle.
I'd gladly pay $25 for a 6 oz glass bottle of the old Old Spice After Shave.
Whoever decided to put out this inferior imitation of the original product should get their retirement in stock options, because this product is a dud!
If you have ever tasted wine or soda that has sat in a plastic cup for a few hours, you can recognize the plastic taste. The taste doesn't alter if your drink was in a glass. Plastic alters the smell of this after shave and/or the formula was altered to be stable in plastic. In either case I threw away the first plastic bottle I bought after a single use, and won't buy another.

1Just awful  May 26, 2010
By Jack Of Clubs "Secular_sage"
Proctor & Gamble have utterly ruined Old Spice After Shave. I would expect nothing less from this company which puts the almighty bottom line above all else.

The product should be renamed. I've got just the title (it's a bit long but it's dead solid accurate)...

OLD WATERED-DOWN Then, in smaller letters: This used to be a great after shave, but the original Shulton formula was waaay too expensive to produce. We'll go ahead and reformulate it so it sorta, kinda looks & smells like the real Old Spice. The younger shavers buying it won't know the difference.

Pathetic.

4A legitimate review NOT comparing it to the "original formula"  Jan 22, 2012
By S. Oller "ph"
As you can see, most of these reviewers are decrying the fact that this isn't the original formula that they all know and love. And while I appreciate that stance and don't blame them, the fact remains that this is still a decent aftershave, especially considering the price.

This aftershave is, in several ways, the exact opposite of Aqua Velva, which I also use on occasion. While Aqua Velva will give you a nice, cooling sensation when applied, Old Spice will actually make your face WARMER. It's very strange, but not bad. Further, while Aqua Velva tends to leave your face smooth and a bit "tight", I've found Old Spice to leave my face feeling smooth and soft, a nice change.

The only downside I've found to this, and the reason I don't give it a full five-star rating, is that it doesn't soothe away razor burn like Aqua Velva does. While they both burn, Old Spice is a bit more "stingy" than Aqua Velva. And the lack of a cooling sensation seems to make you more aware of your razor burn.

Finally, I'll comment on the smell. I love the smell. I think it's fantastic. I've never been a huge fan of the menthol scent of Aqua Velva, the fact is that I just prefer spicier scents. So I'm very happy to have something truly spicy to go to. I've always enjoyed spicy smells, like Col. Conk's Bay Rum shave soap, so this is great for me.

In closing, I know that this stuff isn't as great as it used to be. But, thankfully, there exist spicy aftershaves that cost more and, I assume, are better than this. I have yet to try them as my budget is quite tight at the moment. So, look at this as a budget spicy aftershave. It works well enough and I love the smell of it.

For those looking for an alternative to the original product, you should probably visit the Badger & Blade forums. They have many product reviews there and have a very busy forum wherein you can ask for suggestions. I'd post a link, but I don't think Amazon wants me to post links to external sites. You can easily go to Google and search for the phrase "badger blade" and it'll be the first result.
