3Helpful, more as a "threat"  Jan 10, 2010
By Amy Mcfarland "Mom of 2"
I tried Orlistat (Alli) after the birth of my son as a way of helping me lose some of that unwanted pregnancy weight. I took it for one month, at which point I could no longer tolerate the side effects. Alli works by blocking the absorption of some of the fat from the food you ingest. As a result, that fat gets excreted when you go to the bathroom. In my personal experience, any straying whatsoever from a diet with more than 15 gm of fat per day resulted in increased gas and horrible, wretched-smelling, greasy discharge. Yes, discharge. I'm trying to be polite, but it was truly a foul experience. I was already keeping to a low-fat diet, but adding mayonnaise to my sandwich gave me side effects. By the end of the first week, I had a severe aversion to eating anything with fat in it, so I guess that part worked OK for me.
I did lose some weight, possibly more than I would have without the use of Alli. It was not extreme, if that is what anyone is hoping for. I did like that there were no jittery side effects, like when you have too much caffeine. Overall however I did not care for the experience and decided to lose weight the old fashioned way, by exercise and watching what I ate, without the fear of oily discharge.

5There's no easy way out  Jan 10, 2010
By Michael
The people giving this bad reviews aren't doing it right. I know this because I took this drug for 6 months and lost 60lb (I lost 20 before starting alli for a total of 80lb). Did I lose all that weight just because of alli? No, but it was an aid, a helper, an ALLY, if you will.

This product tries to teach you to eat differently, and you really REALLY have to if weight loss is something you want to keep up until you're at a normal weight. If you're constantly having stomach pain, gas, and leakage, then you're eating too much fat. Plain and simple. Most people don't understand what's in the food they're eating, or what it's role in your body is. I know people that eat a deli sandwich and think that most of the calories come from the 6 slices of turkey inside, when in reality, that only contributes around 60 calories, and the two huge pieces of bread holding the sandwich together have 200+ combined. Food that's cooked with oil in the pan, vegetables topped with butter, any nut or seed, anything crispy or breaded, all of that has fat, and you need to be aware of how much you're taking in.

While I was taking alli, I ate an extremely low fat diet. I'm talking almost no fat here. I never once had a problem with the drug, and I did lose lots of weight. I'm now in excellent physical shape, and run/train everyday. My eating habbits never reverted back to their old ways because "I" changed the way I ate. I didn't just "go on a diet" I really started seeing and treating food differently. I don't eat hyper low fat anymore, because that's not the healthiest thing for what I do. (Just as a note, I love food, and I love the food I eat everyday. It just happens to be healthy. You may have to sacrifice things you're used to eating, but that doesn't mean you're giving up taste and satisfaction)

There's no one golden rule for weight loss, there's not easy solution, there's no absolutes. This drug does EXACTLY what it says it does, and if you have side effects, then you're not upholding your end of the deal. The drug can only do what it's supposed to do...the rest is up to you. It does what it does perfectly, and if you let it help you, it will.

2unpleasant side effects  Jan 10, 2010
By D. Baines
I've used Alli for 6 weeks and towards the end, it had caused me bowel pain. Sure, the first few weeks of pooping with this orange-colored fatty excretions was somewhat tolerable. Looking at it tells me that the drug was working. Because it also causes gas to build up in your GI tract, one could experience urges to release it the usual way. Beware, when you do fart, make sure you are sitting in the toilet as your fart could be a wet one and if you're at work, you don't want people looking at your behind with that orange colored stain in full visible view; you might as well jump in your car and go home to change. This is a good product if you can tolerate the side effects.

5Love!!  Jan 11, 2010
By amie
I have been taking Alli for a week now with absolutly no treatment effects.
I have been on weight watchers before and I think that has helped me know what to eat and what not to eat. I stick with the calories recommended for me and the total Fat grams. To me the Alli is more knowing if I cheat on my diet that I will have the treatment effects and that is enough to scare me not to cheat on my diet. Love Love Love Alli!!!

4No big results yet, but I like it  Feb 24, 2010
By Duckgirl
I've only been on this product for 3 wks and I've lost 4 lbs. I like that I don't get the jitters and it really makes me aware of what I eat. I had a bit of gas in the beginning, but now its only once in a while. I didn't have issues of the "oily discharge". Not to be gross, but I do keep some flushable wipes on hand for the not so solid bowel movements that I do get. I really try to make a conscience effort of keeping every meal under 15 grams of fat like the instructions say. It helps too that I have an Iphone app that I can log everything I eat and look up restaurants nutrition info. So, I can still eat out as long as I keep myself aware of my fat intake. I'm shooting for 35 lbs. I'll have to review again in a couple of months.
